This hat is designed to fit a toddler (12-36 months). It could be made in any DK yarn, or by using a finer or thicker yarn the size could be varied.

Materials:

Approximately 40g (total) of Stylecraft Special DK

In this example the colours are Raspberry, Shrimp, Saffron, Aspen, Turquoise, Aster and Magenta.

4.0mm crochet hook (NB my tension is generally quite loose)

UK terms are used throughout. The ch3 at the start of each round counts as a treble (US dc).

 

With Raspberry, make an adjustable ring (this tutorial is my favourite)

R1: ch3, 11tr into ring, join with sl st and fasten off (12tr).

R2: join in Shrimp, ch3, tr in same st, 2 tr in each tr from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (24tr).

R3: join in Saffron, ch3, 2tr in next st, then repeat [tr in next st, 2tr in next st] to end. Join with sl st and fasten off (36tr).

R4: join in Aspen, ch3, tr in next st, 2tr in next st, then repeat [tr in each of next 2st, 2tr in next st] to end. Join with sl st and fasten off (48tr).

R5: join in Turquoise, ch3, tr in each of next 2 st, 2tr in next st, then repeat [tr in each of next 3st, 2tr in next st] to end. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R6: join in Aster, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R7: join in Magenta, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R8: join in Raspberry, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R9: join in Shrimp, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R10: join in Saffron, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R11: join in Aspen, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R12: join in Turquoise, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R13: join in Aster, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st and fasten off (60tr).

R14: join in Magenta, ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st from previous round. Join with sl st (60tr). Do not fasten off

 

Ear Flap 1

R15 ch1, dc in same st, dc in next 12st (13dc), turn

R16 ch1, dc in same st, dc2tog in next 2 st, dc in each st to end, (12dc), turn

Repeat R16 until 2 stitches remain on hook. Fasten off yarn.

 

Counting around R14, skip 19st and join in Magenta with a sl st. dc in same st and in next 12st (13dc)

Work as from R16 above. Do not fasten off. Finish with a row of dc all around, working 3dc in one of the two remaining stitches at the points of the ear flaps (or in both end stitches for a more rounded finish). Fasten off and weave in ends.
